I was on my way home from work yesterday and noticed (With my windows up and my radio on) a clinking noise coming from underneath my hood. I was stopped at a light so I put the car in neutral and the noise was still there, the light turned green I put it back in drive and accelerated and the noise stayed at a constant level. When I got home, I popped the hood and it seems to be coming from the alternator, sounds kinda like a loose bearing or something.... can that happen? Also am I in any danger by driving it with the noise? The belts and pullies are still tight but that noise creeps me out. I'm going to take it apart on Sunday, does anyone have any suggestions?

If it is the alternator let me know.......I can hook you up. When mine made a clicking noise like that.......it ended up being the bearing in the tensioner.........it could also be the one in the alternator......only way to know is to listen really carefully. As long as you dont let it run like that for too long youll be fine. Your lucky its giving you a warning ahead of time. The last time my alternator died, the bearing totally butchered itself. The shaft ended up just flopping inside the alternator....I could feel the vibration (BAD vibrations) through my shifter even. I had no idea what the problem was until i popped the hood and saw peices of the bearing in the back of the alternator all over my valve cover.

the alternator is going to surge 954,848,156,561,311,001, volts into your steering wheel and you are going to die

It's probably not the alternator considering that the noise was not controlled by the rpms. (other words: the noise didn't speed up when you did), probably the tensioner. Spray some WD-40 or Silicone penetrating oil, yes I said that, on the tensioner and see if the noise goes down. If it does, then you know what is the probably and that the bearings are probably dry on it.

congrats, I'm surprised that it was the alternator. Usually they wine louder when the engine is sped up.

Had a Dragon fly get sucked in to mine one time and it made the most God awful sound you ever heard. Had one explode due to bad windings,so it can happen.
